Alpine Challenges FIA Over Controversial Monaco Pit Lane Penalties

Alpine has lodged a Right of Review after Pierre Gasly lost a podium finish to marginal pit lane speeding penalties, citing systemic flaws in the FIA's speed measurement system.

Alpine is formally challenging the FIA after a series of pit lane speeding penalties stripped Pierre Gasly of a podium finish at the Monaco Grand Prix. The team has lodged a Right of Review, questioning the validity of sanctions that dropped Gasly from third on the road to seventh in the final classification.

Why it matters:

The controversy centers on whether the FIA's timing systems are accurately reflecting driver intent and vehicle speed. With multiple drivers across different teams—including Lewis Hamilton and George Russell—penalized for exceeding the limit by less than 1kph, Alpine argues the issue is systemic. This challenge seeks to determine if the governing body's measurement methods are flawed in specific circuit geometries.

The Details:

  • The Penalties: Pierre Gasly received two five-second penalties for marginal speed infractions. Teammate Franco Colapinto and several other drivers were also sanctioned for similar breaches.
  • Technical Measurement: Monaco utilizes an average speed calculation between two fixed timing loops rather than instantaneous readings.
  • The Geometry Flaw: Due to the pit entry's layout, drivers cutting across the line shorten the actual distance traveled. Because the FIA uses a fixed reference distance, the calculated average speed is artificially inflated, even when the pit limiter is correctly engaged.
  • Legal Threshold: To succeed in a Right of Review, Alpine must present "significant and relevant new evidence." This is a high legal bar, making a reversal of the race results unlikely.

What's next:

While Alpine seeks clarity from the stewards, the team is pivoting its focus toward the Barcelona-Catalunya GP. Currently holding fifth in the constructors' championship, the squad is determined to maintain its positive momentum by introducing a suite of performance updates to the car for the Spanish round.
