Antonelli won't 'nuke' Mercedes team in title fight with Russell, says Palmer
Jolyon Palmer believes Kimi Antonelli won't escalate tensions with George Russell early in Mercedes' championship battle, citing youth and Toto Wolff's experience in managing internal rivalries.
Mercedes has suddenly found itself at the sharp end of a championship fight, and questions are already circling about how long the calm inside the garage will last. But former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer believes the answer is simple: don't expect an explosion anytime soon.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, 19, has stunned the paddock with three wins from the opening four races, surging 20 points clear of teammate George Russell. That margin would typically breed tension, but Mercedes' internal atmosphere remains intact—and Palmer thinks that's no accident.
Why it matters:
Intra-team rivalry can derail a championship push, as Mercedes learned during the Lewis Hamilton–Nico Rosberg era. How Antonelli and Russell manage their duel—and how team principal Toto Wolff handles it—could determine whether the Brackley squad sustains its resurgence or fractures under pressure.
The details:
- Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Palmer said Antonelli is not yet in the mindset of turning rivalry into outright warfare. “He's young... I don't think he's going to nuke the team by going all acrimonious on George for the gain of seven points or 10 points... at least at this stage.”
- Palmer added that if the title fight tightens in September or October, “we'll start to see what the real Kimi is like.”
- Wolff's balancing act: Palmer contrasts Wolff with Helmut Marko's open favoritism toward Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull. “Toto will be completely fair, because he's had this experience... with Rosberg and Hamilton. He'll have a better idea how he's going to manage it.”
- Having a 19-year-old as a championship leader “will make it so much easier than the last time he did it,” Palmer noted.
Between the lines:
The memory of Hamilton vs. Rosberg still looms large, but Wolff appears better equipped to keep harmony this time. Antonelli's youth and contract situation (out of contract at year's end) also reduce the incentive to cause friction early. However, as history shows, harmony in a title fight is rarely permanent—the real test will come if the points gap narrows later in the season.
