Charles Leclerc warns Ferrari as rivals outdevelop SF-26 upgrades
Ferrari brought the most upgrades to Miami, but rival gains left Leclerc frustrated. He warns the development battle is fierce and Ferrari must be 'perfect' to keep pace in 2026.
Ferrari’s ambitious upgrade package for the Miami Grand Prix worked as intended, but Charles Leclerc admits rivals made even larger strides, pushing the Scuderia to sixth (later eighth) and sounding an early warning on the development war in F1 2026.
Why it matters:
With the new-generation cars still in their infancy, the rate of in-season development will define the championship order. Ferrari’s ability to not only bring updates but ensure they outpace rivals is critical to any title ambitions.
The details:
- Ferrari led the grid with 11 updates to the SF-26 in Miami, the most of any team. Leclerc said the “package is working.”
- However, rival upgrades – particularly Red Bull’s improved RB22 and McLaren’s continued progress – proved “probably a little bit better,” according to Leclerc.
- Leclerc spun on the final lap and received a 20-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage multiple times, dropping from P6 to P8.
- Team principal Fred Vasseur confirmed the upgrades “worked as expected,” but highlighted “consistency, managing traffic and extracting the full potential” as areas to improve.
What’s next:
Leclerc stressed that Ferrari has “other things coming soon” in the development pipeline. He warned that this season’s title fight will be decided by who executes upgrades perfectly: “It will all be about the development. We have to make sure we do everything perfect.”
