F1 Approves Mid‑Season 2026 Rule Changes Ahead of Miami GP

F1 officials have agreed on a set of 2026 regulation tweaks to be trialed at the Miami Grand Prix, tightening qualifying energy limits, boosting recharge power, and adding safety measures to curb excessive closing speeds and improve race‑start reliability.

F1 has approved a suite of 2026 regulation adjustments that will debut at the Miami Grand Prix on May 3. The changes aim to curb qualifying energy harvesting, boost recharge power, and introduce new safety features to temper closing speeds and stabilise race starts.

Why it matters:

  • The current hybrid formula has turned qualifying into a harvest‑and‑coast routine, dulling on‑track excitement.
  • Drivers and teams have raised safety concerns about cars closing at extreme differentials while on disparate power settings.

The details:

  • Qualifying: Energy limit reduced from 8 MJ to 7 MJ; super‑clip power raised to 350 kW (up from 250 kW), cutting recharge time to roughly 2‑4 seconds per lap.
  • Event flexibility: Races with lower energy caps increase from 8 to 12, allowing circuit‑specific tuning.
  • Race boost: Maximum additional power capped at +150 kW to limit abrupt speed gaps.
  • MGU‑K deployment: 350 kW permitted in key acceleration zones, reduced to 250 kW elsewhere.
  • Start safety: A low‑power start detection system will auto‑trigger MGU‑K and flash warning lights if a car lags off the line.
  • Energy counter: Reset at the start of the formation lap to correct a previous inconsistency.
  • Wet‑weather tweaks: Higher blanket temperatures for intermediate tyres, reduced ERS torque, and simplified rear‑light signals to improve visibility and control.

What's next:

  • The FIA World Motor Sport Council will hold an e‑vote on the package before the Miami weekend; approved measures (except the start‑line detection system) will be enforced at the race.
  • Teams must re‑tune their energy maps, which is expected to reshape qualifying tactics and race strategy for the remainder of the 2026 season.
