F3 Comeback Confirmed for Sharp After Back-Breaking Crash

Louis Sharp is set to return to F3 action in Monaco after recovering from three fractured vertebrae suffered in a crash with teammate James Wharton at Albert Park. The 19-year-old Kiwi says he's back to full fitness and eager to get his season on track.

Louis Sharp is ready to race again. The Prema driver fractured three vertebrae in a collision with teammate James Wharton during the Sprint Race at the Australian Grand Prix, but he has recovered without surgery and will return at Monaco next month.

Why it matters:

Sharp had shown strong pace before the crash, setting fastest lap in the Sprint. His return strengthens Prema's lineup for the title fight, and his confidence in Monaco—where he scored double points last year—could make him a factor in qualifying-dependent races.

The details:

  • Sharp broke T11, T12, and L1 vertebrae but says the injury sounded worse than it was. No surgery required, just time to heal.
  • Recovery was straightforward: pain-free, able to walk throughout. He spent the break doing physio and rebuilding training.
  • The enforced break was extended by the cancellation of the Bahrain round due to the Middle East conflict, giving him extra time to reset.
  • Wharton suffered a split lung in the same crash and was sidelined for weeks. Both drivers have moved past the incident, acknowledging it was avoidable.
  • Sharp will first get back in the car at a two-day official test at the Red Bull Ring this week, building momentum before Monaco.

What's next:

Formula 3 resumes in Monaco on June 4-7, where qualifying is critical. Sharp is confident: “We need to be fully focused on maximising everything in qualifying because grid position is absolutely critical around Monaco. But I’m confident we can have a really good weekend.”
