Formula 2 sticks to conventional engines, shuns F1 hybrid pathway for 2027 car
F2 will adopt F1-style looks for its 2027 car but refuses to follow the hybrid engine route, citing prohibitive costs and a focus on sustainable fuel development.
Formula 2 is preparing a new car for the 2027 season that will visually align with Formula 1's latest aerodynamic direction, but the junior series is making it clear it will not follow F1's move to complex hybrid power units. The cost of such a shift is simply too high for the spec series.
Why it matters:
As F1’s primary feeder category, F2 must balance training drivers for the top level with maintaining a financially viable model. By sticking to a simpler engine, the series risks a growing gap in driving technique between the two categories, especially as F1's 2026 hybrid-regulations demand a fundamentally different approach to energy management.
The details:
- 2027 car design: F2 CEO Bruno Michel confirmed the next car will feature aerodynamics that mimic the new F1 machines, ensuring drivers are visually familiar with the top series.
- Engine choice: F2 will keep its 600-hp Mecachrome V634 turbocharged V6, rejecting any hybrid components. Michel stated: "We have absolutely no resources to go in that direction."
- Cost containment: Michel emphasized that creating a brand-new car every three years is expensive enough; adopting hybrid tech would trigger a massive cost increase for teams.
- Sustainability: F2 has already beaten F1 to 100% sustainable fuel, working with Aramco on synthetic fuel. This remains their green focus rather than electrification.
- Overtaking aid: DRS will likely stay, though a "Push-to-Pass" alternative is being discussed. Active aerodynamics like F1 uses are not planned.
What's next:
Michel acknowledged F1's new energy-harvesting style may require F2 graduates to spend more time learning the ropes with their F1 teams. However, he expressed confidence that drivers will adapt quickly. “Maybe it will take a little more time… a few laps,” he said. The 2027 F2 car will be revealed later this year, with the first race scheduled for early 2027.
