George Russell Requests V8 Engine Comeback in Future F1 Regulation Wish List

Mercedes' George Russell adds his voice to the V8 engine debate, also calling for lighter cars and sustainable fuels as F1 looks toward the 2031 regulation cycle.

George Russell has added his voice to the growing debate over F1's future engine direction, calling for a return to V8 engines, sustainable fuels, and lighter cars. The Mercedes driver's wish list comes as the sport's leaders already look toward the next regulation cycle set for 2031.

Why it matters:

With the 2026 regulations barely four rounds old, figures across the paddock are already discussing what comes next. The push for a V8 revival, supported by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and team bosses like Toto Wolff, could reshape F1's power unit philosophy — but it faces criticism from those who remember the "boring" racing of the V8 era.

The Details:

  • Russell highlighted two key areas: engine sound/performance and car weight. "Going back to V8, I think that would obviously be pretty cool," he said, also praising sustainable fuels as "a fantastic one for Formula One."
  • On lighter cars: "I think we need to find ways to reduce the cars… it has been a positive impact in terms of racing and drivability, being able to fight close."
  • However, he cautioned against nostalgia: "In the early 2000s… there was no overtaking at all. We need to remember that."
  • The V8 debate has split opinion. Juan Pablo Montoya slammed it as "boring," while Red Bull's Laurent Mekies backed an early start with Ford. Wolff called for a "real racing engine."

Between the Lines:

Wolff also addressed Russell's tough start to 2026, trailing teammate Kimi Antonelli by 20 points. "The clock never lies… Kimi deservedly won the last three GPs. Russell hasn't done as well, due to team problems, bad luck, or his own mistakes. But we know George's value, and he'll return, starting from Canada, very competitive."

What's Next:

The 2031 regulation discussions are still in their infancy, but Russell's comments show drivers are already engaging. Whether F1 returns to V8s or pursues another path, the balance between spectacle, sustainability, and racing quality will be critical.
