Hamilton and Stroll avoid penalties after impeding investigations in Canada qualifying

Lewis Hamilton and Lance Stroll were both investigated for impeding during Canadian Grand Prix qualifying but escaped grid penalties after stewards ruled no unnecessary impeding occurred.

Lewis Hamilton and Lance Stroll have both avoided grid penalties after being investigated for alleged impeding incidents during qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix. The stewards concluded neither driver unnecessarily held up another competitor, allowing both to keep their starting positions.

Why it matters:

With the grid already set after a competitive qualifying session, any penalty could have reshuffled the top positions and altered race strategies. The decisions maintain the original starting order, keeping Hamilton in fifth and Stroll in his Q1 position.

The details:

  • Hamilton's case: The seven-time world champion was summoned after Q3 for allegedly impeding Pierre Gasly into Turn 8. Hamilton explained he believed Gasly was not on a push lap, and his team shared that view. Gasly and his team agreed it was not a case of "unnecessary impeding," leading to no further action.
  • Stroll's case: The Canadian was investigated for an incident in Q1 involving Nico Hulkenberg. Stroll noted he lacked power to move ahead quickly and feared losing control if he moved off the racing line onto dirty track. Hulkenberg also acknowledged it was not unnecessary impeding.
  • Stewards' reasoning: Both decisions were based on driver and team agreements that the incidents did not warrant penalties, with no formal sanctions applied.

What's next:

Hamilton will start the Canadian Grand Prix from fifth place, while Stroll retains his grid position. The focus now shifts to race day, where tire management and strategy will be key at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
