How F1 25's 2026 DLC Recreates Super Clipping and Overtake Mode

EA and Codemasters' 2026 season pack for F1 25 faithfully replicates the controversial energy management and aero quirks, but overtake mode may be overpowered compared to real life. Here's our hands-on take.

EA and Codemasters have tackled the unenviable task of simulating Formula 1's divisive 2026 technical regulations in the upcoming DLC for F1 25. A hands-on preview reveals a faithful recreation of super clipping and overtake mode, though some real-world nuances are missing.

Why it matters:

For fans and gamers, this DLC offers the first chance to experience the radical 2026 cars virtually. The accurate portrayal of energy management and aero quirks helps explain the real-season challenges teams and drivers face, making it more than just a game update.

The details:

  • Super clipping: The drop-off in speed at the end of straights (e.g., Spoon Curve and 130R at Suzuka) is precisely replicated. You lose roughly 20mph while flat-out, with automatic transmission downshifting unexpectedly. This accurately mirrors real-life energy harvesting.
  • Overtake mode: Replaces DRS as the primary passing aid. When within one second of another car at the activation zone, the battery meter turns blue and power surges. In the game, it's so effective that multiple overtakes per straight are common — possibly more powerful than in real life, as seen at Canada.
  • Energy management: Battery charge fluctuates more than in 2025 cars. Lift-and-coast is the optimal technique for Esports players, though casual drivers can rely on assists for automatic boost and overtake deployment. Dropping to 0% charge leaves you crawling.
  • Aero modes: Straight mode (activated by button press) replaces DRS, with automatic activation available. Cornering mode is default. The cars have ~15% less downforce than 2025, noticeable at medium-speed corners like Dunlop at Suzuka.
  • Missing features: The preview build lacks varied race starts between teams and the ability to choose energy deployment locations. These omissions are minor but would add depth.

What's next:

The 2026 season pack launches June 3, including the Madring circuit (not available for preview). Despite some oversights, it’s a solid adaptation that captures the unique driving challenge of the new regulations. Esports players will need to master lift-and-coast, while casual fans can enjoy the chaos of overtake mode.
