Max Verstappen confirms he will stay in F1 in 2027, but future team remains open

Max Verstappen has confirmed he will remain in Formula 1 in 2027, but his future with Red Bull is uncertain. He's in no rush to decide and wants freedom to race outside F1, opening the door for teams like Mercedes and McLaren.

Max Verstappen has put an end to speculation about his short-term future, confirming he will still be active in Formula 1 in 2027. Speaking to De Telegraaf, the four-time world champion said: “Yes, definitely. Unless some really crazy things happen, but I don’t expect that. I hope everyone keeps their word. But I can confirm that I’ll stay in Formula 1.”

Why it matters:

Verstappen's commitment removes any immediate uncertainty about the biggest name on the grid, but his carefully worded remarks leave the door wide open for a move away from Red Bull. With Mercedes and McLaren closely monitoring his situation, the driver market could shift dramatically if he decides to leave the team where he won all his titles.

The details:

  • Verstappen is in no rush to sign a new deal, even though his current contract runs beyond 2027. “I’d prefer to be connected to Red Bull for the rest of my life, I’ve always said that. But making that decision doesn’t have to be today or tomorrow,” he said.
  • The key factor isn't money but freedom. Verstappen wants to race outside F1 — including the Nordschleife and the 24 Hours of Daytona — and any team that restricts that would likely lose his interest.
  • He also left a notable caveat: “Even if it all comes to nothing, that’s fine by me. That’s how I look at life.” This suggests he is genuinely comfortable with leaving Red Bull if the terms don't suit him.
  • Teams like Mercedes and McLaren would be “music to their ears” — both have strong lineups but would likely pounce if Verstappen becomes available.

What's next:

Verstappen's future will likely remain a topic of discussion throughout 2025 and into 2026. He has indicated he is relaxed about the timeline, but the clock is ticking for Red Bull to offer him the right package — both on track and off it. If they don't, one of the sport's biggest driver moves in years could materialize.
