Max Verstappen heads to Nurburgring 24 Hours without crucial exemption
Max Verstappen must navigate the full Nürburgring 24 Hours qualifying process after missing exemptions due to team disqualification and technical issues, while his protégé secures a direct spot.
Max Verstappen will be forced through the complete qualifying gauntlet for the Nürburgring 24 Hours, missing out on the exemptions reserved for the most successful teams from earlier NLS races and April's qualifying rounds. The four-time world champion's team finds itself among those starting from scratch, partly due to their disqualification during the NLS2 race and technical troubles in the second qualifier event.
Why it matters:
Missing the exemption doesn't eliminate Verstappen's pole position chances, but it makes the path considerably more complex. The Nürburgring's unique six-session qualifying system demands strategy and precision far beyond F1's straightforward format.
The details:
- Exemption system: Five teams earned a direct entry into TQ3 (the final qualifying session) based on results from NLS rounds and qualifier races. Verstappen's Winward Racing team was not among them.
- Dutch representation: Thierry Vermeulen, Verstappen's protégé, secured his TQ3 spot after pole in the second qualifier, guaranteeing at least 12th on the grid.
- Qualifying structure: Six sessions over three days. The first three (Q1, Q2, Q3) are glorified practice for top classes like SP9; only lower classes set their grid there (positions 50–161). Q2 is mandatory for all drivers – skipping it means exclusion.
- Top Qualifying (Friday): 44 teams (including Verstappen) start in TQ1, 30 minutes to set a lap. Top 20 advance to TQ2, top 7 to TQ3. Driver rotation rules: if Verstappen drives TQ1, he cannot drive TQ2.
- TQ3 battle: 12 teams fight for pole in a one-hour session with individual launches, each driver gets two flying laps. Winner gets the Glickenhaus Trophy.
What's next:
Verstappen will compete in the SP9 class with Winward Racing. His first real qualifying laps come Friday in TQ1. With his raw pace and the team's experience, a strong result is still possible, but the margin for error is razor-thin.
