Mercedes blocks Antonelli's Nürburgring debut, citing experience gap
Mercedes has firmly denied teenage sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli a chance to race at the Nürburgring this season, with deputy team principal Bradley Lord telling the 19-year-old to wait until he has won four world championships like Max Verstappen.
Mercedes has no plans to allow its teenage Formula 1 championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli to race at the Nürburgring anytime soon, despite the Italian's expressed desire to earn his Nordschleife permit by year's end.
The Brackley squad's deputy team principal Bradley Lord made the stance clear, using Verstappen's four titles as a benchmark for such privileges.
Why it matters:
With Antonelli leading the 2026 drivers' standings by 20 points and Mercedes dominating the constructors' championship, the team cannot afford any unnecessary risks. A crash or injury in a GT race could derail a title campaign that is already shaping up to be historic.
The Details:
- Antonelli, 19, has converted all three of his opening pole positions into victories, the first driver to do so in F1 history.
- He recently mentioned wanting to earn his DMSB Nordschleife Permit before the end of the year.
- Mercedes' response: Bradley Lord dismissed the idea firmly: "No. I've spoken to him about it. I think he meant it more as a joke." He added: "Give it a try after four world championships!" – a clear reference to Verstappen's experience.
- Lord noted that Verstappen "perhaps has a bit more range thanks to his experience," implying Antonelli is not yet ready for the Green Hell.
- Mercedes currently leads the constructors' standings with 180 points, 70 ahead of Ferrari.
What's next:
Antonelli now heads to the Canadian Grand Prix chasing a fourth consecutive victory. The team's priority remains protecting its championship lead, leaving any Nürburgring ambitions on hold until at least the end of the season – or after multiple titles.
