Mercedes' Unbeaten Start Faces Reality Check as Rivals Close Gap in Miami

Despite Mercedes' perfect 4-0 start, Miami revealed a tightening field as McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull closed the gap with major upgrades. The development battle is set to intensify in Canada.

Kimi Antonelli's Miami victory kept Mercedes' unbeaten Grand Prix streak alive in 2026, but the weekend was far from a walkover. McLaren dominated the Sprint, Red Bull showed renewed pace, and Ferrari flashed speed—proving the front of the field is closing in.

Why it matters:

After four straight wins, Mercedes is no longer untouchable. Rivals brought aggressive upgrade packages to Miami, and the performance gaps shrank dramatically. The championship fight now hinges on development speed and execution, not just raw pace.

The Details:

  • Upgrade war: McLaren and Red Bull each introduced seven new parts, while Ferrari led all teams with 11. Mercedes brought only minor tweaks, saving a bigger package for Canada.
  • Sprint reversal: Lando Norris took McLaren's first pole of 2026 and won the Sprint, ending Mercedes' run of dominance in competitive sessions. Oscar Piastri made it a 1-2.
  • Grand Prix rebound: Mercedes optimized the W16 after Sprint set-up struggles, with Antonelli taking pole and winning the race. But Norris pushed him all the way, finishing just seconds behind.
  • Performance delta: McLaren's Andrea Stella estimated Mercedes still holds a "couple of tenths" advantage—most visible in high-speed corners and late-race pace. Ferrari's Fred Vasseur said their upgrades worked, but inconsistency in traffic hurt results.
  • Red Bull's step: Laurent Mekies noted a "definitive step forward"—from 1.2s off pole in Japan to under 0.2s in Miami qualifying, despite Max Verstappen's first-lap spin costing a podium shot.

The Big Picture:

The development race is now the season's defining narrative. McLaren has a history of rapid in-season gains (2023-25 constructors' titles) and plans another upgrade in Canada. Mercedes is targeting Montreal for a major aero overhaul, but Toto Wolff cautioned that "sometimes upgrades don't correlate with the stopwatch." Ferrari may seek an ADUO (additional power unit development) if their ICE lags the benchmark Mercedes unit by over 2%—first review comes after Monaco.

What's Next:

All eyes turn to Canada (May 22-24), another Sprint weekend. McLaren will bring phase two of its Miami upgrade. Mercedes aims to put its big package to the test. Red Bull, ineligible for ADUO, will continue chassis-side gains. With four teams capable of pole and victory, the championship battle is wide open.
