Nürburgring caps ticket sales for first time in 50+ years due to Verstappen mania

Max Verstappen’s debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours has driven demand so high that organizers limited ticket sales for the first time in the event’s history. Meanwhile, a SUPER GT driver takes issue with how Red Bull presented Verstappen’s recent Fuji performance.

The Nürburgring 24 Hours is bracing for an unprecedented crowd as four-time world champion Max Verstappen makes his first appearance in the legendary endurance race. Race director Walter Hornung confirmed that for the first time in more than five decades, ticket sales had to be capped to manage the overwhelming response from fans.

Why it matters:

Verstappen’s presence at a non-Formula 1 event is drawing a level of attention that forces organizers to change long-standing practices. This underlines the Dutchman’s global pull beyond F1 circles – and sets a new benchmark for driver-driven ticket demand.

The details:

  • Record demand: Hornung told Auto Motor und Sport that both long-time Nürburgring enthusiasts and new fans “literally overran” the organizers this year, leading to the first ticket cap in the event’s 50-plus-year history.
  • Verstappen’s preparation: The Red Bull driver had already competed in several NLS races over the past year to build experience ahead of his 24-hour debut.
  • Race schedule: Qualifying begins Thursday (local times 13:15–15:15 and 20:00–23:30), with the race starting Saturday at 15:00.

Meanwhile, another Verstappen-related controversy:

SUPER GT driver João Paulo Oliveira criticized Red Bull’s promotional video showing Verstappen outpacing Japanese driver Atsushi Miyake in wet conditions at Fuji Speedway. Oliveira argued the footage didn’t account for rapidly changing track conditions and failed to “respect” the SUPER GT championship and its drivers.

What's next:

All eyes are on the Nordschleife this weekend as Verstappen aims to tackle one of motorsport’s toughest challenges. Whether the fan frenzy impacts track action remains to be seen, but the race is already a historic sellout.
