Nyck de Vries Eyes Nürburgring GT3 Debut, Inspired by Verstappen
Nyck de Vries wants to follow Max Verstappen to the Nürburgring Nordschleife, but admits he's never driven a GT3 car and faces a packed schedule.
Nyck de Vries is eyeing a future start at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, inspired by Max Verstappen's upcoming debut on the legendary Nordschleife. The former F1 driver and current Formula E competitor says he's never driven a GT3 car but finds the prospect 'fantastic.' With a crowded calendar, however, a timeline remains uncertain.
Why it matters:
De Vries' interest highlights the growing draw of endurance classics like the Nürburgring among top-tier single-seater talent. As Verstappen prepares to tackle the 24-hour race, it could open the door for other drivers to explore GT racing – even those, like De Vries, who have limited experience in the discipline.
The details:
- No GT3 experience yet: De Vries has never driven a GT3 car. His only previous GT outings came in 2017, when he drove a Ferrari GTE.
- Bucket-list venues: He names Spa, Bathurst, and the Nürburgring as events that appeal to him: 'It seems fantastic to do them at some point.'
- Calendar clash: His current Formula E commitments (plus potential WEC duties) leave no room for a side trip to the Nordschleife. 'With the schedule I have now, it’s not possible,' he says.
- Coordination challenge: De Vries acknowledges that series organizers have their own agendas, making it hard to align calendars for driver crossovers.
What's next:
De Vries isn't ruling out a future GT3 start once his primary schedule allows. 'I definitely don’t rule it out for the future,' he told GPblog. With Verstappen's Nürburgring debut generating buzz, other drivers may follow – but for De Vries, the first step will be finding a free weekend.
