Palmer: Antonelli Won't 'Nuke' Mercedes Title Fight with Russell Any Time Soon

Jolyon Palmer believes Kimi Antonelli will avoid aggressive tactics against George Russell in their 2026 title battle, at least until later in the season if they remain close.

Mercedes has dominated the 2026 season so far, winning all four grands prix, with Kimi Antonelli taking three victories and leading George Russell by 20 points in the drivers' championship. Despite the tight intra-team rivalry, former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer does not expect the 19-year-old Antonelli to deploy a "nuke"—i.e., turn acrimonious—against his teammate any time soon.

Why it matters:

The harmony between Mercedes' two young drivers is being tested as they both chase their first world title. How the team manages this dynamic will shape the championship fight, with the potential for tension reminiscent of the Hamilton-Rosberg era. Palmer's assessment offers insight into the likely behavior of both drivers and team principal Toto Wolff's ability to keep things under control.

The details:

  • Palmer noted on the F1 Nation podcast that Antonelli is out of contract at the end of the year, but that doesn't make him likely to force a rift for marginal gains: "I don't think he's going to nuke the team by going all acrimonious on George for the gain of seven points or 10 points, or whatever the swing might be, at least at this stage."
  • He added that if the gap narrows by September or October, we might see a different side of Antonelli: "Maybe, if they're close in September, October, we'll start to see what the real Kimi is like at that point."
  • Palmer also backed Wolff to handle any hostility fairly, referencing his experience with the Hamilton-Rosberg battle: "Toto will be completely fair... He'll have a better idea in his head how he's going to manage it."
  • Currently, having a 19-year-old championship leader actually makes Wolff's job easier compared to the earlier era, according to Palmer.

What's next:

The Mercedes duo will continue their title fight through the European season. If Antonelli extends his lead, the pressure may shift to Russell to become more aggressive. But for now, the team expects a calm, professional rivalry that allows Mercedes to maintain its strong form.
