Red Bull's Miami Turnaround: Steering Fix and Upgrades Unlock Pace

Red Bull's Miami upgrades and a critical steering fix transformed Max Verstappen's season, delivering front-row qualifying pace and confidence after a difficult start.

Red Bull left Miami encouraged after a major performance turnaround, driven by a long-awaited steering fix and a suite of upgrades that finally delivered. While Max Verstappen's race was compromised by an opening-lap spin and penalty, his front-row qualifying performance signaled the RB22's renewed competitiveness.

Why it matters:

After four races without a podium, Verstappen's worst start since 2018, Red Bull needed a breakthrough. The Miami package and steering resolution suggest the team may have closed the gap to McLaren and Ferrari, keeping their championship hopes alive.

The details:

  • Steering issue fixed: Verstappen first flagged the problem during pre-season testing in Barcelona. Red Bull replaced the entire steering rack and supporting components between races, with Verstappen immediately noticing the difference during a filming day at Silverstone.
  • Upgrade package: Revised sidepods, new floor, and Red Bull's rotating rear wing concept (160-degree rotation, developed since November) were introduced. The rear wing had failed attempts in Bahrain, Melbourne, and Suzuka before working in Miami.
  • Performance gain: Red Bull is believed to have clawed back around a second compared to its deficit in Japan. Technical director Pierre Wache said the upgrade delivered what was expected, and the steering fix unlocked additional driver performance.
  • Confidence boost: Verstappen compared it to scoring goals in football. "You can show things in training, but it also has to be confirmed in matches."

What's next:

Verstappen currently sits seventh in the standings with 26 points. The Miami breakthrough provides momentum for the upcoming races. If the reliability holds, Red Bull could re-enter the title fight.
