Red Bull unveils major upgrade package at Miami GP
Red Bull arrives at Miami with a seven‑part upgrade for its 2026 RB22, including the active “Macarena” rear wing, a new side‑pod redesign, and weight‑saving tweaks, aiming to close the performance gap after a rough start.
Miami’s race weekend turned into a showcase of upgrades. Ten of the eleven F1 entries arrived with fresh parts, but Red Bull brought a seven‑item package to fix the RB22’s early‑season woes.
Why it matters:
- The RB22 is still ~12 kg over the 2026 minimum, hurting straight‑line speed and tyre wear.
- The active wing restores down‑force without extra drag, a key edge on Miami’s long straights.
- Aero tweaks to front wing, side‑pods and floor improve airflow and close the gap to Mercedes and Ferrari.
The details:
- Active “Macarena” rear wing – rotates up to 160°, adding down‑force without extra drag.
- Front‑wing, inlet and side‑pod overhaul – new front‑wing profile, repositioned inlets and side‑pods with a waterslide to cut drag.
- Engine cover, floor, bib geometry & weight‑saving – new shapes blend with side‑pods to extract load, stabilise flow and halve the 12 kg excess, targeting the 768 kg limit.
What's next:
- Team boss Laurent Mekies says no miracles, but upgrades should give Verstappen and Hadjar a comfortable Miami platform.
- Another upgrade is slated for the European swing, likely at Austria or Britain, to hit the weight limit and optimise aerodynamics.
- If successful, Red Bull could re‑emerge as a front‑runner for 2026, reshaping the title fight.
