Rookie Arvid Lindblad: 'It hasn't sunk in' that I'm racing in F1

Eighteen-year-old Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad admits his Formula 1 debut still feels surreal, as he reflects on a rapid rise from karting to the grid and his early-season points.

Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad has admitted that the reality of being a full-time Formula 1 driver has still not fully sunk in, even after four rounds of his debut season.

The 18-year-old, who jumped from Formula 2 to F1 after just one year in the feeder series, says the achievement is “extremely special, extremely cool” — but the weight of the moment is still catching up.

Why it matters:

Lindblad’s rapid ascent highlights Red Bull’s aggressive driver development pipeline. With a British Indian heritage, he also represents a growing diversity story in a sport that has long struggled with representation. His early performance — including points on debut in Australia — suggests he could be a long-term asset for the team.

The details:

  • Lindblad began competitive karting in 2015, moved to F4 in 2022, then climbed through F3 with Prema in 2024 before graduating to F2.
  • He scored three wins and finished sixth in the F2 standings, enough to earn a Racing Bulls seat for 2026.
  • The Briton (his mother is British Indian) visited Delhi before the season and called the possibility of an Indian Grand Prix “really special” — though he acknowledged it’s unclear how realistic that is.
  • On track, Lindblad qualified ninth and finished eighth in Melbourne, scoring four points. He hasn’t added points since, but sits 12th in the standings, behind teammate Liam Lawson in 10th.
  • The season saw a five-week break after the cancellation of the Saudi Arabian and Bahrain GPs, then resumed in Miami. The next round is the Canadian Grand Prix on May 24.

What's next:

With more races to come and a steep learning curve ahead, Lindblad’s focus remains on consistency. “I don't think it's fully sunk in,” he told BBC Newsbeat. “This is something I've been working towards my whole life.” If he can turn flashes of pace into regular points finishes, the rookie’s dream could quickly become a very solid reality.
