Sargeant: Verstappen Would 'Kick Everyone's Ass' in WEC if He Makes the Switch
Logan Sargeant believes Max Verstappen would dominate the World Endurance Championship if he joins Ford's Hypercar program, and he wants the four-time F1 champion in his car.
Logan Sargeant is convinced that if Max Verstappen ever races in the World Endurance Championship, the result is practically a foregone conclusion: dominance.
The former Williams driver, now a Ford works driver in WEC, didn't hold back when asked about the possibility of the four-time Formula 1 champion joining the Hypercar class. Ford is preparing a blockbuster 2027 entry and has reportedly held talks with Verstappen about a switch from Grand Prix Sundays to the brutal 24-hour warfare of Le Mans.
Why it matters:
Verstappen's potential move would immediately reshape the WEC landscape. With manufacturers pouring resources into Hypercar, a driver of his caliber could tilt the balance of power before even turning a wheel. Sargeant's comments offer an insider's view from someone who has raced against Verstappen in F1 and now competes in the very series he might join.
The details:
- Sargeant currently drives a Proton Competition Mustang GT3 Evo in WEC, but will step up to Ford's LMDh prototype in 2027.
- Asked about Verstappen joining, Sargeant said: "If he is driving, I hope he's in my car!"
- Raw speed alone isn't the threat. Sargeant pointed to Verstappen's technical instincts, consistency, and adaptability. "It goes so much beyond just driving style," he said. "He makes adjustments lap in, lap out."
- Sargeant believes Verstappen would be an immediate benchmark: "He's the quickest driver in the world. He's going to most likely kick everyone's ass. I'd rather that be in my car than the other."
- Ford's growing ties with Red Bull through their F1 engine partnership make the possibility more than paddock gossip.
What's next:
With Ford's Hypercar project still in development and Verstappen's F1 contract running through 2028, any move is likely years away. But the warning from inside Ford's own camp is clear. Sargeant summed it up: "You don't win four world championships without the speed he has. Even when he's not in the best car, he still finds a way." If Verstappen does come to Le Mans, the rest of the field may be racing for second place.
