Throwback: Prost, Senna and Schumacher achieve never-to-be-repeated F1 feat

On 9 May 1993, F1 icons Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and Michael Schumacher stood together on the Spanish GP podium – the only time the three legends shared the top three. A snapshot of past, present, and future champions.

On 9 May 1993, three of Formula 1’s greatest names shared a podium for the first and only time. Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and Michael Schumacher stood together at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya after the Spanish Grand Prix – a fleeting convergence of eras that would never be repeated.

Why it matters:

This podium represents a unique intersection of F1 history: Prost, the outgoing four-time champion in his final season; Senna, his fierce rival with three titles, who would tragically lose his life less than a year later; and Schumacher, the young German who would go on to eclipse both in terms of statistics. That they shared a podium just once underscores how rare such moments are in a sport driven by timing and circumstance.

The details:

  • Prost drove his Williams to a commanding victory, finishing 16.8 seconds ahead of the field. The race was largely uneventful except for an intense battle with teammate Damon Hill, which ended when Hill’s engine failed two-thirds into the race.
  • Senna soldiered to second in his McLaren despite severely impaired vision – his visor coated in oil from engine failures of other cars. It was a trademark display of determination from the Brazilian.
  • Schumacher completed the podium in third for Benetton, the 24-year-old continuing to announce himself as a future star. He would go on to win seven world titles.
  • The 1993 Spanish GP marked Prost’s 47th career victory. He would retire at the end of that season, while Senna’s fatal crash at Imola in 1994 would make this podium a poignant historical artifact.

Between the lines:

That three drivers who collectively dominated the sport for over a decade only shared a podium once is almost impossible to believe. Team dynamics, rivals being in different teams at different times, and the vagaries of racing conspired to make Catalunya 1993 a unique moment in F1 lore. Thirty-three years on, it remains a snapshot of an era when three titans of the sport stood together for the only time.
