Verstappen finishes sixth in Nürburgring 24h qualifier after disrupted session

Max Verstappen qualified sixth for the Nürburgring 24-hour race after a challenging session marred by traffic and a long red flag. Driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3, he finished over three seconds off pole, highlighting the tough transition from F1 to the legendary Nordschleife circuit.

Max Verstappen's first competitive outing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife ended with a sixth-place finish in Qualifying Race 1 for the 24-hour race, a result hampered by heavy traffic and a lengthy session-stopping red flag. The F1 world champion, driving the #3 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3, was over three seconds off the pole time set by Norbert Zsigo in a BMW.

Why it matters:

Verstappen's high-profile participation brings immense attention to the legendary endurance event, highlighting the crossover appeal between F1 and GT racing. His performance, while solid, demonstrates the unique challenges of the Nordschleife, where traffic management and adapting to a radically different car are as critical as raw pace. For F1 fans, it's a rare glimpse of their champion competing outside his usual domain under unpredictable conditions.

The details:

  • The session was heavily disrupted by an early red flag caused by a crash for Christian Krognes, which required extensive barrier repairs and delayed running by over 30 minutes.
  • Verstappen took over the car from teammate Lucas Auer after the first 20 minutes. Footage showed Auer was involved in contact with a Porsche that spun in front of him just prior to the handover.
  • During his runs, Verstappen was consistently caught in heavy traffic on the 20.8km circuit, preventing a clean lap and ultimately leaving him 3.524 seconds behind the pole-sitting BMW.
  • Pole position was secured by Norbert Zsigo with a time of 8:09.488. The top five was filled with experienced GT specialists, underscoring the level of competition.

What's next:

Verstappen and the Winward Racing team will analyze the data and look for a cleaner run in the remaining qualifying sessions. The primary goal is to secure a strong starting position for the main 24-hour race, where strategy, reliability, and navigating traffic for a full day become the defining factors. All eyes will remain on the #3 car to see if the F1 champion can translate his skills into a top result in one of motorsport's most grueling events.
