Verstappen hints at longer F1 future after FIA engine overhaul

Max Verstappen's positive reaction to the FIA's 2027 engine regulation changes suggests the four-time champion may extend his F1 stay, as he welcomes a shift toward more powerful internal combustion engines.

Max Verstappen signaled a potential extension of his Formula 1 career after the FIA agreed to adjust the 2027 engine regulations, boosting internal combustion power and reducing electrical deployment. Speaking in 2025, the four-time champion called the changes a step in the right direction and hinted they could influence his long-term commitment.

Why it matters:

Verstappen’s future has been a major talking point, with the Dutchman previously suggesting he might step away early. The regulatory shift directly addresses driver concerns about the power unit balance, potentially keeping the sport’s biggest star on the grid beyond his current Red Bull contract.

The details:

  • The FIA proposed increasing ICE power by ~50kW via higher fuel flow and reducing ERS deployment by ~50kW, creating a 60–40 split favoring the internal combustion engine.
  • The changes were agreed in principle after an online meeting involving team principals, FOM, and power unit manufacturers, following the Miami Grand Prix.
  • Verstappen told media in Canada: “It's definitely heading into a very positive direction. I think it's the minimum I was hoping for… that's definitely what I think also the sport needs.”
  • When asked if the direction could affect his F1 future, he replied: “I just want a good product in Formula 1, and that will for sure improve the product.”

What's next:

Verstappen has yet to make a final decision, but his positive remarks suggest the regulatory direction aligns with his preferences. With the 2027 rules now set, the four-time champion may be more inclined to extend his stay, though his recent outings in other series like the 24 Hours of Nürburgring show his diverse racing interests.
