Verstappen's Nürburgring 24 Hours Faces Major Weather Disruption

Cold temperatures, rain, and gusty winds are forecasted for the Nürburgring 24 Hours as Max Verstappen makes his highly anticipated endurance racing debut. Conditions may improve by Sunday.

Max Verstappen’s highly anticipated debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours is set to be a battle against the elements as much as the competition. Current forecasts predict cold temperatures, intermittent rain, and gusty winds throughout the opening days, with conditions only slightly improving by the race's conclusion on Sunday. The four-time Formula 1 world champion will be among the main protagonists in one of motorsport’s most iconic endurance events, driving a GT3 car for a team expected to be a frontrunner. The Nordschleife, already treacherous in dry conditions, becomes even more unpredictable when wet, adding another layer of complexity.

Why it matters:

Verstappen’s presence has elevated the Nürburgring 24 Hours to a global spectacle, drawing fans and media attention beyond the usual endurance racing audience. However, the challenging weather – with temperatures dropping close to 1°C overnight and a high chance of rain – could significantly impact race strategy, driver performance, and safety, especially on the demanding Nordschleife circuit. The event has already sold out thanks to Verstappen’s involvement, and the weather will now play a key role in the show.

The details:

  • Thursday (qualifying): Overcast skies, 50% rain, 7°C day / 1°C night. Two qualifying sessions: 13:15-15:15 and 20:00-23:30 local.
  • Friday (qualifying): Mostly cloudy, 40% rain, 9°C / 3°C. Four qualifying sessions including Top Qualifying 1, 2, and 3.
  • Saturday (race start): Cool, cloudy, 30% rain, 9°C / 2°C. Warm-up 10:00-11:00, formation lap 14:40, race starts 15:00.
  • Sunday (finish): Partly cloudy, improving, 13°C, 13% rain. Race concludes Sunday afternoon.
  • Verstappen will be competing against a field of over 140 cars, with the 24-hour race covering the full Nordschleife and GP circuit combined.

What's next:

The green flag drops at 15:00 local time on Saturday, with the race continuing through the night. Teams and drivers, including Verstappen, will need to adapt their strategy to the evolving weather conditions. If forecasts hold, the final hours on Sunday could offer a drier and slightly warmer finish to a grueling contest.
