Vowles: Williams Should Be Scoring Points Consistently After Summer Break
Williams team principal James Vowles believes the Grove outfit will be in a position to consistently score points following the August break, after upgrades helped secure a double-points finish in Miami.
Williams team principal James Vowles has stated that the Grove-based outfit should be in a position to consistently score points after the summer break in August. Following a rocky start to the 2026 season due to delays on the FW48, the five-week break between Japan and Miami allowed Williams to introduce upgrades, including a lighter car, which yielded a double-points finish at the Miami Grand Prix — the team's first of the season — with Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon finishing ninth and tenth.
Why it matters:
After struggling in the early rounds, Williams is aiming to re-establish itself as a consistent midfield contender. Currently eighth in the constructors' championship with five points, they are only three points ahead of Audi and nine behind Racing Bulls. Every point is crucial in a tight midfield battle, and a regular points-scoring capability from August onward would solidify their recovery.
The details:
- Vowles acknowledged that progress is relative to competitors: "It's a relative game against others as to how much we can bring."
- Despite the Miami step forward, Williams still has a few tenths to find to match the fifth-fastest team, Alpine.
- The team has a "pipeline of work" that extends to just beyond the August break, which Vowles believes will put them in a comfortable position to score points every weekend.
- Until then, he expects Williams to get closer to a perfect weekend without necessarily being the fifth fastest.
What's next:
Williams now looks ahead to the Canadian Grand Prix on May 22-24. Vowles is confident that by the end of the upgrade cycle, the team will be a regular points scorer. Fans can expect gradual improvement, but a consistent top-ten finish streak likely won't begin until after the summer break.
