Antonelli Blitzes Field in Final Monaco Practice
Kimi Antonelli stamped his authority on Monaco by becoming the first driver into the 1m12s in FP3, finishing over three tenths clear of Charles Leclerc as Mercedes laid down a marker ahead of qualifying.
Kimi Antonelli threw down the gauntlet in Monaco by setting the weekend's fastest time in final practice. The Mercedes rookie became the first driver into the 1m12s with a 1m12.720s, outpacing Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by over three tenths despite leaving time on the table in the final sector.
Why it matters:
Monaco qualifying is often decisive, and Antonelli's pace puts Mercedes at the head of the field. Ferrari answered strongly with both cars within four tenths, teeing up a front-row fight between the two historic rivals. Red Bull and McLaren remained nearly a second back, leaving both camps with work to do before tackling the unforgiving streets in Q3.
The details:
- Antonelli's 1m12.720s came during the final soft-tyre runs, making him the first driver into the 1m12s. He was fastest in Sectors 1 and 2 and still had margin in Sector 3.
- Leclerc looked set to challenge until traffic at Rascasse forced him to abandon his final lap, leaving him second ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton by just 0.004s.
- George Russell was fourth, 0.763s off the pace, with Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri fifth and sixth, both over nine tenths behind.
- A red flag ended the session with eight minutes to go after Oliver Bearman crashed at Massenet. Earlier, Franco Colapinto clipped the barriers at the Fairmont Hairpin and Liam Lawson had a scare through the Swimming Pool.
- Cadillac suffered another difficult session as brake issues hampered both Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas.
What's next:
Qualifying kicks off at 4pm local time, with the focus on whether Antonelli can convert his FP3 pace into a maiden pole. Ferrari should challenge for the front row, but with overtaking nearly impossible around Monte Carlo, Saturday's grid will likely shape Sunday's result.
