Ferrari favorites in tight Monaco pole fight after Hamilton tops Friday practice

Ferrari topped both Friday sessions in Monaco, with Hamilton and Leclerc trading fastest times. Verstappen stayed close while Mercedes and McLaren struggled, setting up a tight qualifying battle for pole position at the Principality.

Ferrari proved their pre-weekend favorite status by locking out the top two positions in both Monaco practice sessions. Lewis Hamilton led a Ferrari 1-2 in FP2 by a tenth over Charles Leclerc, though Max Verstappen kept Red Bull within two tenths to warn of a tight qualifying battle.

Why it matters:

Monaco qualifying often decides the race on a track where overtaking is nearly impossible. Ferrari remain without a pole or victory in 2026, and securing top spot on Saturday would finally break Mercedes' early stranglehold after five straight wins. A strong session would also validate the slow-speed cornering package rivals fear most from the Scuderia.

The details:

  • Ferrari's Friday: Leclerc led FP1 before Hamilton set the pace in the quicker second session, giving the team a sweep of the day's running.
  • Red Bull close: Verstappen finished just 0.168s back, with Leclerc noting both the Dutchman and Hamilton looked "very strong" around the Principality.
  • Mercedes off pace: The championship-leading Silver Arrows sat 0.3s behind Ferrari. George Russell admitted the Italian squad are "the team to beat," even after finding improvements between practice sessions.
  • McLaren in trouble: Lando Norris lost 45 minutes of FP2 to a likely power unit issue that caused his car to "simply turn off." Both McLarens were over a second adrift, with Oscar Piastri conceding they made limited progress from a difficult start.
  • Leclerc's issue: The Monegasque twice ran off track, including at Mirabeau on his first lap, citing brake struggles that sapped confidence. He hopes overnight fixes will unlock more speed for qualifying.

What's next:

Saturday's qualifying is the main event at Monaco, where grid position is king. Ferrari must convert their practice dominance into a first pole of the year, but Verstappen's proximity and Leclerc's brake concerns mean nothing is assured. Mercedes will chase overnight gains while McLaren faces a steep climb just to reach the sharp end.
