Ferrari Still Fighting for the Championship? Team Principal's Comments Reveal Much

Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur believes the championship will effectively restart after a five-week development break, with the Miami GP revealing which teams have made the best progress. Ferrari aims to use this period and special 'ADUO' engine upgrade rules to close a significant qualifying deficit to the dominant Mercedes team.

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur has declared that "a new championship will start" at the upcoming Miami Grand Prix, following a five-week development break. This period is seen as a critical opportunity for teams, including Ferrari, to analyze their cars and introduce significant upgrades to close the gap to the dominant Mercedes team, which has won the first three races of the 2026 season.

Why it matters:

Vasseur's statement underscores the pivotal nature of the early-season development race. With Mercedes establishing a strong lead, the upcoming upgrades could determine whether Ferrari can mount a genuine title challenge or if the championship battle will solidify as a two-horse race between Mercedes drivers. The break allows for fundamental work on performance deficits that can't be addressed during a normal race weekend schedule.

The Details:

  • Vasseur pinpointed qualifying as Ferrari's primary weakness, noting a deficit of "five to seven tenths of a second" to Mercedes on Saturdays. He acknowledged that the gap is smaller in race trim, partly thanks to Ferrari's stronger race starts.
  • The Frenchman emphasized that every team will be bringing updates to Miami, including power unit manufacturers working on software improvements, making it a reset point for the competitive order.
  • A key factor for Ferrari's potential comeback is the ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) regulation. This rule allows teams with a significant power unit performance deficit to introduce performance upgrades outside the normal freeze.
    • Teams with a 2-4% deficit (approx. 20-40 HP) can introduce one immediate upgrade and plan another for 2027.
    • Teams with a deficit greater than 40 HP are permitted two immediate upgrades and two more for 2027.
  • As the current benchmark, Mercedes is only allowed to introduce reliability or safety-related power unit changes, not performance upgrades, under this system.
  • Ferrari's main performance issues are a lack of straight-line speed and efficiency. The team hopes the ADUO system will provide the necessary development scope to address these with engine upgrades.

What's Next:

The Miami Grand Prix will serve as the first true test of each team's development progress during the extended break.

  • If Ferrari can successfully leverage the ADUO rules to close the power gap and improve its single-lap pace, Vasseur's prediction of a new championship beginning could hold true, reigniting the title fight.
  • Furthermore, a change in FIA measurement methods from June is expected to curb a Mercedes compression trick estimated to be worth about 15 HP, which could further level the playing field.
  • The coming weeks represent Ferrari's best chance to alter the trajectory of its season before Mercedes' early advantage becomes insurmountable.
