Ferrari warned of 'negative loop' over Miami GP upgrades

Former Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley warns the team's failed Miami upgrades could trigger a 'negative loop' of correlation issues, wasting limited ATR time. Leclerc also raises tyre degradation concerns after a tough race.

Rob Smedley, former Ferrari race engineer, has warned the Scuderia could be entering a "negative loop" after a raft of upgrades at the Miami GP failed to translate into performance. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finished P6 and P8 respectively, with Leclerc losing the lead and spinning late after struggling with tyre degradation.

Why it matters:

Ferrari brought 11 upgrades to Miami, more than any other team, but the lack of improvement raises serious questions about correlation between simulation and track performance. If the development path is flawed, it could derail their 2026 season as limited ATR resources get consumed by backtracking.

The details:

  • Ferrari's SF-26 upgrades: 11 parts introduced after a five-week break, but Hamilton was compromised early and Leclerc struggled with tyre degradation.
  • Leclerc noted a "massive" drop on the medium tyre and called for investigation: "We need to look at it. We've lost a lot of performance compared to yesterday."
  • Smedley's warning: "It starts a negative loop... reverse-engineering process that just goes round and round." Wind tunnel and CFD time (ATR) is limited; if spent on correlation fixes, development stalls.

Between the lines:

Smedley's comments highlight a classic pitfall: when track data doesn't match simulation, teams waste precious development time diagnosing rather than improving. With the ATR cap, this can be "soul destroying" and effectively end a season's progress if not resolved quickly.

What's next:

Ferrari must urgently investigate whether the upgrades are fundamentally flawed or if setup issues masked their potential. The next races will be critical to see if they can break the loop and recover performance. Leclerc's tyre degradation pattern also needs analysis before the summer break.
