FIA Reviews ADUO Engine Rankings Following Red Bull Surprise

The FIA is re-evaluating its Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) rankings after Red Bull Powertrains was deemed the top engine performer, despite Mercedes' early-season dominance in 2026.

The FIA has agreed to review the findings of the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) program. This comes after reports emerged that Red Bull Powertrains (RBPT) has been judged to possess the most powerful internal combustion engine (ICE) on the grid, a result that contradicts the current sporting reality of the 2026 season.

Why it matters:

The ADUO system is designed to maintain competitive parity by granting development tokens and budget flexibility to underperforming power unit manufacturers. If these rankings are inaccurate, it could unfairly penalize the fastest engines or grant an undue advantage to rivals, potentially shifting the trajectory of the 2026 championship battle.

The Details:

  • Performance Gap: RBPT is currently ranked as the benchmark. Mercedes HPP follows closely, within 2%, earning one upgrade token for 2026 and 2027 along with additional budget cap relief.
  • The Laggards: Audi, Ferrari, and Honda are more than 4% behind the benchmark, qualifying them for two tokens per year to help close the gap.
  • The Paradox: Despite RBPT's ranking, Mercedes has won all six Grands Prix and three Sprints so far this season, highlighting a disconnect between raw ICE metrics and overall power unit integration.
  • System Integrity: The FIA keeps specific metrics confidential to prevent manufacturers from "gaming the system" by intentionally appearing slower to secure more development tokens.

The Big Picture:

This situation highlights the complexity of the 2026 technical regulations. Because the ADUO focuses solely on the internal combustion engine rather than the full power unit, it overlooks critical factors like reliability and hybrid integration. The fact that RBPT is the "fastest" on paper while Mercedes dominates the track suggests that efficiency and stability are currently more valuable than raw combustion power.

What's next:

The FIA is now conducting a second audit of the data to ensure absolute precision before the formal communication is released. With Lewis Hamilton already leaking the findings following his second-place finish in Monaco, the governing body is under pressure to finalize these rulings to avoid further instability in the paddock.
