FIA Reviews ADUO Rankings After Red Bull Ford Named Benchmark Engine

The FIA is re-examining its preliminary ADUO evaluation after unexpectedly naming Red Bull Ford Powertrains as the benchmark engine manufacturer, a result that contradicts current on-track performance.

The FIA is conducting a second review of the preliminary Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunity (ADUO) results. The initial evaluation identified Red Bull Ford Powertrains as the benchmark engine manufacturer, a finding that has sparked confusion across the paddock and prompted a formal re-examination of the data.

Why it matters:

The ADUO system directly dictates the number of engine upgrades a manufacturer can introduce throughout the season. By being labeled the benchmark, Red Bull faces the strictest development limits, while manufacturers trailing behind receive more opportunities to close the gap. This creates a significant strategic disadvantage for the team currently rated as the strongest, regardless of actual race results.

The Details:

  • Upgrade Allocation: Under the preliminary findings, Red Bull is the benchmark (0 upgrades). Mercedes is permitted one upgrade, while Ferrari, Honda, and Audi are allowed two.
  • The Performance Paradox: The ranking is unexpected given that Mercedes power units have dominated the 2026 season so far, winning every race and sprint event.
  • Red Bull's Stance: Team Principal Laurent Mekies and Max Verstappen have expressed confusion, arguing that a simple internal combustion engine (ICE) measurement fails to capture the complexity of modern power unit architecture, including turbo concepts and electrical integration.
  • FIA's Defense: Nikolas Tombazis maintains that the teams originally agreed to a simple horsepower-based index. He clarified that ADUO is not a "Balance of Performance" system used in GT racing, but a specific development framework.

What's next:

The FIA's current review aims to ensure calculation accuracy and provide Red Bull with a detailed explanation of their classification rather than simply altering the outcome. While Tombazis remains open to incorporating more complex parameters into the methodology in the future, the current framework is expected to remain the standard for the remainder of the 2026 season.
