FIA to Review Power Unit Rankings After Red Bull Challenges ADUO Status
Red Bull is contesting the FIA's designation of its engine as the 2026 benchmark, a ranking that currently prevents the team from utilizing the ADUO catch-up mechanism for critical upgrades.
Red Bull has formally requested clarification from the FIA regarding the latest ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) rankings, which identify the team's internal combustion engine (ICE) as the current performance benchmark. This designation effectively blocks Red Bull from accessing critical development upgrades intended to help trailing manufacturers close the gap.
Why it matters:
The ADUO mechanism is central to maintaining competitive balance in the 2026 regulations. By being labeled the "best," Red Bull is denied the ability to evolve its power unit, while rivals—including Mercedes, who has dominated the opening five races—are eligible for upgrades. If the FIA's findings remain unchanged, Red Bull faces a strategic deadlock where they cannot improve their hardware while their competitors are actively closing in or pulling away.
The Details:
- The Discrepancy: Red Bull's internal data contradicts the FIA's findings. Team boss Laurent Mekies previously stated that the Red Bull ICE is approximately three-tenths of a second adrift of the Mercedes unit.
- The Ranking Gap: The FIA analysis placed Mercedes more than 2% behind Red Bull, granting them one upgrade this season, one next year, and additional cost cap allowance and test bench hours.
- Wider Field: Other manufacturers, including Ferrari, were deemed to be more than 4% off the benchmark, qualifying them for the maximum of two upgrades this year and two in 2027.
- FIA Response: In response to Red Bull's query, the FIA has agreed to review sensor data from the first five races to double-check the output of each ICE.
By the numbers:
- 2%: The performance deficit that allows Mercedes to access limited ADUO upgrades.
- 4%: The threshold for other teams to receive maximum development opportunities.
- 5 Races: The data sample size used by the FIA to establish the current performance hierarchy.
What's next:
The FIA's re-evaluation of power sensor data will determine if Red Bull's status is downgraded, potentially unlocking their ability to introduce upgrades. Regardless of the outcome of this specific review, the governing body will conduct further ADUO performance audits following the Hungarian and Mexican Grands Prix.
