Hamilton Leads Ferrari 1-2 in Monaco FP2 as Norris Stops Early

Ferrari locked out the top two spots in Monaco FP2, with Lewis Hamilton leading Charles Leclerc ahead of Max Verstappen. McLaren's session soured early when Lando Norris stopped with a suspected battery issue, depriving him of vital laps before Saturday's qualifying.

Ferrari continued its control of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend by locking out the top two spots in second practice, with Lewis Hamilton again leading Charles Leclerc. McLaren's afternoon proved far more disruptive, as Lando Norris came to a halt at the Nouvelle Chicane with a suspected battery issue just 15 minutes into the session.

Why it matters:

Monaco is a track where raw pace and confidence outweigh race strategy, and Ferrari's dominant Thursday places it firmly in pole contention. Hamilton's quick adaptation to Ferrari machinery around the unforgiving streets highlights the team's early strength, while McLaren's loss of track time could prove costly when qualifying margins are measured in hundredths.

The details:

  • Front-running pace: Hamilton posted a 1m13.026s, edging Leclerc by 0.111s and Max Verstappen by 0.168s. George Russell and Kimi Antonelli were fourth and fifth for Mercedes, 0.379s and 0.503s adrift.
  • Late confusion: Hamilton locked up and dived unexpectedly into the Ferrari pit box, seemingly catching the team off guard before gesturing upward in a likely request for a front-wing angle change.
  • McLaren's trouble: Norris stopped in the Nouvelle Chicane runoff with an apparent battery failure, robbing him of valuable laps. Oscar Piastri could manage only seventh, leaving McLaren over a second off the pace.
  • Hadjar's bounce-back: Isack Hadjar, who crashed in FP1, finished sixth after his Red Bull was rebuilt, just one thousandth ahead of Piastri.
  • Audi steady: Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto placed eighth and ninth, while Oliver Bearman completed the top 10 for Haas.
  • Red flag: Sergio Perez pulled his Cadillac over late in the session after his front-right brake began smouldering and filled the cockpit with smoke.

What's next:

Final practice offers the last chance to refine setups before Saturday's all-important qualifying, where grid position effectively decides the race. Ferrari enters that session as the clear favorite, though Hamilton's unscheduled pit visit suggests the team is still fine-tuning the balance. McLaren faces a race against time to resolve Norris's electrical issue at a circuit where every lap is vital.
