Home favourite Leclerc warned after impeding Lawson in Monaco FP1

Charles Leclerc topped opening practice for his home Monaco Grand Prix but was handed a formal warning for impeding Liam Lawson, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad received the same punishment for blocking Oscar Piastri during FP1.

Charles Leclerc set the pace in opening practice for his home Monaco Grand Prix but left the stewards room with a formal warning for impeding Liam Lawson. Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad was also handed a caution after blocking Oscar Piastri during Friday morning's session.

Why it matters:

At Monaco, impeding is particularly costly on the narrow streets where evasion is nearly impossible. For Leclerc, keeping his record clean is vital as he targets another pole at home, while Lindblad's warning shows the zero-margin reality rookies face in Monte Carlo.

The details:

  • Leclerc's team radio stated "3 seconds to Bearman, 5 seconds to Lawson," leading him to assume a five-second gap to Lawson. The actual gap was two seconds, causing the impeding. Ferrari agreed to revise its communication protocols.
  • Lindblad's engineer wrongly told him Piastri had aborted his lap, causing the Briton to relax his vigilance. The stewards called it a mitigating circumstance but warned future misinterpretations would bring stricter penalties.
  • Despite the summons, Leclerc still topped the session with a 1:13.978, narrowly ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton.

What's next:

Clearer team communications will be essential ahead of qualifying on a circuit where traffic disputes can decide grid positions. Having used their warning, both drivers now face the threat of grid penalties if they repeat the offense. Leclerc will aim to convert Friday pace into pole, while Lindblad must keep his mirrors full to survive his rookie Monaco outing.
