Honda Acknowledges Red Bull's Lead in 2026 ICE Benchmarks

Honda remains confident despite FIA data positioning Red Bull as the 2026 power unit benchmark, while Aston Martin grapples with combined engine and chassis deficiencies.

Honda is unfazed by the FIA's assessment naming Red Bull Powertrains (RBPT) as the current benchmark for internal combustion engine (ICE) development under the new ADUO regulations. Despite a significant performance gap, Honda officials maintain that they have a clear roadmap to recover the lost ground.

Why it matters:

The 2026 regulatory shift represents a total reset for power unit manufacturers. RBPT's emergence as the frontrunner is a significant statement, especially as a newer project compared to established giants like Honda and Ferrari. This benchmark not only sets the performance ceiling for the new era but also triggers specific "additional development support" for manufacturers trailing the lead, creating a strategic window for rivals to close the gap.

By the numbers:

  • Red Bull (RBPT): Currently the gold standard for ICE performance.
  • Ferrari: Approximately 4% behind, making them eligible for substantial regulatory development aid.
  • Audi: Estimated to be between 4% and 6% adrift of the benchmark.
  • Honda: Currently facing the largest deficit, trailing RBPT by roughly 6% to 8%.

The big picture:

This technical deficit is only one part of a broader struggle for the Aston Martin-Honda partnership. While Honda focuses on the power unit, Fernando Alonso’s recent performance at the Monaco Grand Prix highlighted critical chassis weaknesses. Alonso described the car's handling as unpredictable and volatile, adding a chassis-related failure to a growing list of concerns that already include power unit output and energy deployment efficiency. The team is effectively fighting a two-front war: recovering engine horsepower while stabilizing a precarious chassis.

What's next:

Honda and Aston Martin are maintaining a transparent communication channel to align their development targets. Mike Krack has emphasized that both parties are fully aware of the necessary improvements. The immediate focus is on integrating power gains with a more stable aerodynamic platform to avoid further disappointing results as the 2026 season progresses.
