Kimi Antonelli Reacts to FIA's Power Unit Upgrade Grant for Mercedes
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli expresses surprise after reports reveal Mercedes is eligible for power unit upgrades to close a performance gap with Red Bull.
Mercedes is set to receive power unit upgrades through the FIA's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) mechanism, a move that has caught championship leader Kimi Antonelli off guard. Despite the team's absolute dominance in the first half of the 2026 season, the FIA's technical assessment indicates that Mercedes' internal combustion engine (ICE) still trails the benchmark set by Red Bull.
Why it matters:
The ADUO mechanism is designed to prevent a single manufacturer from permanently dominating the grid by allowing lagging engines to catch up. For Mercedes, receiving this benefit while already leading the championship could create an insurmountable performance advantage. If the team can successfully refine a power unit that is already winning races, they may effectively neutralize any remaining threats from Red Bull and the other manufacturers.
The Details:
- The Performance Gap: The FIA has ranked the Mercedes ICE as the second-best on the grid. It is reportedly between 2% and 4% behind Red Bull's output.
- Upgrade Allocation: Based on this deficit, Mercedes is eligible for one upgrade this season and another in 2027. In contrast, Ferrari, Audi, and Honda—all trailing by more than 4%—are expected to receive two upgrades in both 2026 and 2027.
- Current Dominance: The grant comes at a time of peak performance for the Silver Arrows, who have won all six Grands Prix held so far in 2026.
- Championship Standing: Antonelli, currently on a streak of five consecutive victories, holds a commanding 66-point lead over teammate Lewis Hamilton.
What's next:
Antonelli has emphasized that while the opportunity is welcome, extracting more performance from a sophisticated power unit is a long-term engineering challenge rather than a quick fix. As the paddock moves toward the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, the focus will be on how Mercedes integrates these FIA-permitted developments to sustain their momentum and widen the gap over a chasing pack that is also receiving its own set of upgrades.
