Kimi Antonelli to review clash with Russell after heated radio exchange
Kimi Antonelli admits he needs to review his battle with George Russell after a fiery radio outburst forced Toto Wolff to intervene. The Mercedes junior lost ground and later conceded he made a mistake, but believes Russell's defending was 'naughty.'
Kimi Antonelli has confirmed he will "review" his battle with George Russell that forced Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff to take to the radio and urge his teenage star to calm down.
Why it matters:
The incident highlights the fine line between aggression and control for young drivers in high-pressure wheel-to-wheel racing. Antonelli, still in his early F1 career, must learn to manage emotions during on-track battles without compromising team harmony or performance.
The details:
- Antonelli made a move around the outside of Russell into Turn 1 on lap 6 of the 23-lap sprint race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He felt Russell left him no space, leading to minor contact and forcing Antonelli off track.
- Later on the same lap, he hit a bump approaching the Turn 7/8 chicane and went off again, losing second place to Lando Norris. A late pass attempt on the final lap saw him gain an advantage by cutting the track, which he had to cede back.
- Over the radio, Antonelli called Russell's move "naughty" and argued a penalty was warranted. After engineer Pete Bonington tried to calm him, Wolff stepped in, telling him to "concentrate on the driving, not on the radio moaning." Wolff also said the matter would be handled internally post-race.
- Reflecting on the incident, Antonelli admitted: "I need to review that because I was well alongside, and I got pushed off. Then I made a mistake into Turn 8… I compromised my race from there."
What's next:
Antonelli's willingness to self-review is a positive step, but the pressure will only intensify as he continues to race alongside a proven teammate in Russell. Internal talks with Wolff and the engineering team are expected to set clearer expectations for on-track conduct and radio discipline.
