Leclerc Leads the Way in Monaco GP FP1 as Local Hero Sets Early Pace

Charles Leclerc topped FP1 at the Monaco GP, edging Hamilton and Verstappen. Two red flags disrupted the session, while Antonelli impressed in fourth.

Charles Leclerc laid down an early marker at his home race, topping the opening practice session for the Monaco GP with a lap of 1:13.978. The Ferrari driver edged teammate Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull's Max Verstappen in a session punctuated by two red flags, setting up an intriguing weekend ahead.

Why it matters:

Monaco is a track where track position is king, and getting up to speed quickly is critical. For Leclerc, a home hero who has yet to win his own race, a strong FP1 builds momentum ahead of qualifying. However, practice times can be deceptive as teams vary fuel loads and tire compounds.

The details:

  • Leclerc went nearly six-tenths clear of Hamilton after just 15 minutes, before Antonelli briefly split the Ferrari duo, ending the session 0.4s behind the Monegasque.
  • Verstappen claimed third, with Antonelli fourth, followed by Russell (Mercedes) and Norris (McLaren) in P5 and P6.
  • Hulkenberg, Piastri, Bortoleto, and Gasly rounded out the top ten.
  • Haas tension: Esteban Ocon was furious after teammate Ollie Bearman blocked him on a flying lap, with Bearman calling the incident “stupid” over team radio.
  • Two red flags: Isack Hadjar spun at the Swimming Pool chicane (driver OK but confused), and later debris from an Aston Martin caused a stoppage.

What's next:

FP2 later today will offer a more representative picture as teams switch to softer tires and higher fuel loads. All eyes will be on Saturday’s qualifying, where Leclerc will aim to convert early pace into a potential pole position on the streets of Monte Carlo.
