Lewis Hamilton faces potential grid penalty for impeding Pierre Gasly in Canadian GP qualifying

Lewis Hamilton is under FIA investigation for blocking Pierre Gasly during Q1 at the Canadian Grand Prix, risking a grid penalty that could drop him from fifth place on the starting grid.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is in danger of losing his fifth place on the grid for the Canadian Grand Prix after being summoned to the FIA stewards for allegedly impeding Pierre Gasly during qualifying.

The incident occurred on Hamilton's outlap in Q1, as he weaved to warm up his tires on the run down to Turn 8 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Gasly, on his first flying lap, encountered Hamilton and was forced to take evasive action before finding a way past. The stewards will now determine whether Hamilton's actions warrant a grid penalty.

Why it matters:

A penalty would reshuffle the starting order for Sunday's race, potentially dropping Hamilton from fifth to a lower position and disrupting Ferrari's strategy. With wet conditions a realistic possibility, grid position could prove critical.

The details:

  • The incident: Hamilton was on an outlap, weaving to warm tires, as Gasly approached on a fast lap. Gasly had to maneuver around the Ferrari before continuing.
  • Hamilton's qualifying: He qualified fifth in Q3, sharing the third row with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, behind the Mercedes and McLaren cars.
  • Gasly's struggles: The Alpine driver ended up 14th in Q2 after a difficult weekend. Team-mate Franco Colapinto advanced to Q3 and took 10th on the grid.
  • Other investigations: Aston Martin's Lance Stroll is also facing stewards for impeding Audi's Nico Hulkenberg in Q1. Cadillac's Sergio Perez and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso are also under investigation for separate incidents.

What's next:

The stewards' hearing is scheduled for one hour after qualifying. If Hamilton is penalized, it would mark another setback for Ferrari, who are already battling to close the gap to Mercedes and McLaren this season. George Russell claimed pole for Mercedes, beating team-mate Kimi Antonelli in a close session.
