Max Verstappen Handed Fresh Boost After Major Nürburgring 24 Hours BoP Change
Late Balance of Performance adjustments at the Nürburgring 24 Hours benefit Max Verstappen and his Mercedes-AMG team as rivals BMW and Lamborghini face added weight and power cuts.
Max Verstappen has received a clear boost in his quest for victory at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, as late Balance of Performance adjustments penalize several of his top rivals. The Dutchman's team will start from fourth on the grid, with the #84 and #130 Lamborghinis ahead. In endurance racing, BoP is used to equalize pace by adding weight or reducing power to faster cars.
Why it matters:
These changes directly benefit Verstappen's Mercedes-AMG entry, which was left untouched by the adjustments. While Mercedes already carries one of the heaviest cars at 1,355kg, the additional weight applied to key competitors BMW (1,350kg after +10kg) and Lamborghini (1,335kg after +5kg) closes the relative gap and could swing the race in Mercedes' favor.
By the numbers:
- Weight: Lamborghini and Porsche each gain 5kg. BMW, the defending champion with Kelvin van der Linde among its drivers, is hit with a 10kg increase, the largest of any team.
- Power: Lamborghini's engine restrictor is reduced by half a millimeter to limit output. Ford, which uses a twin-restrictor system, has its second restrictor reduced by 1mm. Other manufacturers remain unchanged.
- Grid position: Despite starting fourth, Verstappen's team now has a performance advantage relative to the front row that could materialize over the long race distance.
What's next:
The race will test whether these BoP tweaks are sufficient to level the field. Verstappen's driving and strategy will be critical. If the adjusted performance holds, Mercedes could challenge for victory despite not being on pole. The BoP changes indicate race organizers anticipate a tighter contest than qualifying suggested.
