Max Verstappen Offers First Reaction to Wet Nürburgring Nighttime Challenge

Max Verstappen admits he could barely see during his first nighttime run at the Nürburgring 24 Hours in wet conditions, but the four-time F1 champion says the experience was vital preparation.

Max Verstappen admitted he could "barely see" during his first taste of nighttime driving at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, as rain and fog made conditions treacherous. The four-time Formula 1 champion is competing in the endurance classic for the first time, co-driving the #3 Mercedes.

Why it matters:

For a driver accustomed to the controlled environment of F1, tackling the Nürburgring's infamous 'Green Hell' at night in mixed weather is a rare challenge. Verstappen's willingness to step outside his comfort zone highlights his versatility and hunger for new experiences, while his early struggles underscore the unique difficulty of endurance racing.

The details:

  • Verstappen drove the #3 Mercedes in wet, dark conditions during a pre-race session, with onboard footage showing limited visibility.
  • "The conditions were quite tricky," Verstappen told Viaplay. "A lot of rain, so I could barely see with a little bit of fog and vapour coming off the track. You just can't see where there is a lot of water. So you just have to drive slowly."
  • He emphasized the importance of getting accustomed to night driving: "For me it was important to drive in the dark for a while anyway and get used to it a little bit, with your eyes as well."
  • Teammate Jules Gounon dismissed concerns: "I don't think many things have an effect on Max, to be honest! He's young, he has good vision. It's just going to be something new, which is quite funny for a four-time F1 World Champion to go somewhere and say I'm a rookie."

What's next:

Verstappen and his co-drivers Lucas Auer, Jules Gounon, and Daniel Juncadella will contest the 24-hour race proper, with weather forecasts remaining unsettled. Gounon believes Verstappen's adaptability will serve him well once the race begins, despite his rocky introduction to night driving.
