Mercedes Dominates Sprint Qualifying in Canada as Russell Takes Pole

George Russell leads a Mercedes 1-2 in sprint qualifying at the Canadian Grand Prix, with Lando Norris third. Albon and Lawson granted permission to start after practice incidents.

Five rounds into the 2026 Formula 1 season and we've already got our third sprint race at the Canadian Grand Prix. George Russell will start from pole position ahead of his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, with world champion Lando Norris rounding out the top three.

Why it matters:

Mercedes has sent a clear signal by locking out the front row in Montreal. After a mixed start to the season, the team's strong qualifying performance suggests they have found a competitive edge on this circuit, potentially setting up a decisive battle against McLaren and Ferrari in the sprint race.

The details:

  • Front row lockout: Russell edged Antonelli by 0.086 seconds, securing his second sprint pole of the year. Norris was a further 0.112s back in third.
  • McLaren pair: Oscar Piastri took fourth, keeping McLaren in contention but trailing the silver cars.
  • Ferrari fifth and sixth: Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will start on the third row, still seeking a breakthrough in 2026.
  • Verstappen seventh: Max Verstappen could only manage seventh for Red Bull, a surprise given his usual strong form in Canada.
  • Incidents: Alex Albon and Liam Lawson were unable to set times in sprint qualifying due to damage from separate practice crashes. The stewards granted both permission to start from 21st and 22nd respectively.
  • Complete grid: The full starting order is: 1 Russell, 2 Antonelli, 3 Norris, 4 Piastri, 5 Hamilton, 6 Leclerc, 7 Verstappen, 8 Hadjar, 9 Lindblad, 10 Sainz, 11 Hulkenberg, 12 Bortoleto, 13 Colapinto, 14 Ocon, 15 Bearman, 16 Alonso, 17 Perez, 18 Stroll, 19 Gasly, 20 Bottas, 21 Albon, 22 Lawson.

What's next:

The sprint race later today will be a short but critical test of Mercedes' race pace. If they can convert this qualifying advantage into a win, it will put pressure on McLaren and Ferrari heading into Sunday's grand prix.

  • Key watch: Tire degradation and overtaking opportunities at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve could shake up the order.
  • Recovery drives: Albon and Lawson will aim to carve through the field, while Verstappen will need to gain places quickly to stay in the championship fight.
