Monaco GP: Hamilton Leads Ferrari 1-2 in FP2 as Norris Hits Trouble
Ferrari dominated opening day in Monaco as Lewis Hamilton led a Scuderia one-two in FP2, while a suspected technical issue left Lando Norris stranded at the tunnel exit with just eight laps completed.
Lewis Hamilton continued Ferrari's strong start to the Monaco Grand Prix weekend by topping second practice to lead a Scuderia one-two ahead of Charles Leclerc. The seven-time champion set a 1m13.026s on the streets of Monte Carlo, with his Monegasque teammate just 0.111s behind, while McLaren's Lando Norris suffered a suspected technical issue that limited him to just eight laps.
Why it matters:
Ferrari's clean sweep of Thursday signals genuine pace at the principality rather than a fleeting one-lap fluke. With Hamilton and Leclerc separated by barely a tenth, the Scuderia looks well placed to challenge for pole position and Sunday's race win, worrying rivals who hoped the tight Monte Carlo streets would level the playing field.
The details:
- Hamilton's 1:13.026 edged Leclerc by just over a tenth, capping a dominant opening day for Ferrari.
- Max Verstappen was third for Red Bull, 0.168s off the pace, while Mercedes locked out the next two positions with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
- Oscar Piastri was seventh for McLaren, trailing the leading Ferrari by over a second on a circuit where driver confidence is everything.
- Norris stopped at the tunnel exit and spent most of FP2 in the garage, leaving him with no meaningful data ahead of Saturday's crucial sessions.
- Isack Hadjar ended sixth on his Red Bull debut weekend, while Audi's new lineup of Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto placed eighth and ninth respectively.
What's next:
Cars return to the track for third practice at 12:30pm local time on Saturday before qualifying determines the grid for Sunday's grand prix. Ferrari will look to convert its Thursday advantage into a front-row lockout, while McLaren faces a race against time to diagnose and fix Norris's issue and get both cars into Q3 contention.
