Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying Results: Antonelli Takes Pole for Mercedes

Kimi Antonelli clinched pole position for Mercedes at the Monaco Grand Prix, narrowly beating Max Verstappen. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc locked out the second row as Aston Martin struggled at the back of the field.

Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for Mercedes at the Monaco Grand Prix, narrowly edging out Max Verstappen's Red Bull by just 0.043 seconds in Saturday's qualifying session. Lewis Hamilton lines up third for Ferrari alongside teammate Charles Leclerc, locking out the second row on a weekend where track position means everything.

Why it matters:

Around the streets of Monte Carlo, qualifying is arguably more decisive than at any other venue on the Formula 1 calendar. Overtaking is virtually impossible, meaning Antonelli's place at the front gives him clean air and complete strategic control into Turn 1. The slender margin to Verstappen also confirms that Mercedes has the raw one-lap pace to fight at the very front, setting up what should be a tense fight for the lead provided Antonelli gets off the line cleanly.

The details:

  • Front-row battle: Antonelli posted a 1:12.051s to deny Verstappen, despite the Dutchman setting the pace in both Q1 and Q2.
  • Ferrari double-threat: Hamilton edged Leclerc for third, giving the Scuderia two cars on the second row within three tenths of pole.
  • Red Bull consistency: Isack Hadjar qualified fifth, placing both Bulls inside the top five and underlining the team's strong weekend.
  • McLaren off the pace: Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris could only manage seventh and eighth, with the Woking squad lacking ultimate single-lap speed compared to the leading pack.
  • Aston Martin's slump: Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were both eliminated in Q1 and will start 21st and 22nd, a sobering result for the green squad.

What's next:

Starting from pole in Monaco is the strongest strategic advantage in Formula 1, and Antonelli will look to control proceedings from the front. Verstappen and the Ferrari pair know that only a flawless race, a strategic gamble, or an error from the leader is likely to create any opening on a circuit where passing is nearly impossible. Mercedes is firmly in the box seat for Sunday, but executing a clean race from pole remains the ultimate challenge on the streets of the Principality.
