Phenomenal Max Verstappen Grabs Nürburgring 24 Hours Lead

Max Verstappen stormed into the lead of the Nürburgring 24 Hours with a stunning double stint, executing two remarkable overtakes and thrilling the crowd.

Max Verstappen has taken the lead of the Nürburgring 24 Hours after a phenomenal double stint in the #3 Team Verstappen Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3. The four-time F1 world champion showcased his versatility, pulling off two outstanding overtakes to move from 10th to 1st place.

Why it matters:

Verstappen's performance in endurance racing highlights his exceptional adaptability beyond Formula 1. Competing in the grueling Nürburgring 24 Hours keeps his racecraft sharp and reinforces his reputation as one of the most versatile drivers in motorsport.

The details:

  • Dani Juncadella started the race from fourth on the grid before handing over to Verstappen at the end of the first hour. Strategy shuffles left Verstappen in 10th when he took the wheel.
  • Early scare: Verstappen nearly lost control on his first lap but saved the car, avoiding the barriers.
  • First overtake: He passed the #47 KCMG of Jesse Krohn in breathtaking fashion.
  • Second move: Moments later, he dispatched the #911 Manthey Racing of DTM champion Ayhancan Güven with an aggressive pull-out move.
  • Other incidents: Thierry Vermeulen crashed heavily in his Ferrari 296 GT3 after contact with a Porsche Cayman, destroying the car. The #16 Scherer Sport PHX retired after Alex Sims got caught in a chain collision under a Code 60 zone.
  • Double overtake for lead: Verstappen, now in third, executed a fabulous double overtake on the #34 Walkenhorst Motorsport Aston Martin and the #67 HRT Ford Racing Ford to snatch the lead, thrilling the crowd.
  • Handover: After seven laps in each of two stints, Verstappen handed the car to Jules Gounon, who rejoined in the lead.

What's next:

Verstappen's break allows him to rest while the race continues. The team aims to maintain the lead through the night and secure a strong result. The Dutchman's ability to adapt to the GT3 machinery bodes well for future endurance appearances.
