Red Bull must make a marquee signing to halt brain drain

Red Bull is losing staff, race engineer GP Lambiase, to rivals, raising doubts that on-track success alone can retain talent. A marquee hire is needed to stop the brain drain and stay competitive.

Red Bull's on-track success is being shadowed by a talent exodus that has alarmed Sky Sports F1 analyst Karun Chandhok. The departure of race engineer GP Lambiase to McLaren for 2028, after fellow Red Bull alumni Rob Marshall and Will Courtenay already jumped ship, points to a cultural shift that could erode the team's edge.

Why it matters:

  • Talent loss threatens Red Bull's ability to develop a competitive car under the new 2026 regulations, where rapid innovation is essential.

The details:

  • GP Lambiase, Verstappen's race engineer and head of racing, will join McLaren in 2028 after Rob Marshall and Will Courtenay already moved there.
  • Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley have also left for rival teams, while long‑time team principal Christian Horner and advisor Helmut Marko departed in 2023.
  • Red Bull sit sixth in the Constructors' Championship with 16 points and the R22's handling and tyre‑management issues have hampered performance.

What's next:

Red Bull will need a marquee hire—perhaps a former Mercedes technical chief or a proven team leader—to bring expertise and attract further talent. Laurent Mekies must reshape the engineering culture and present a compelling vision before the Miami GP, the first test of any turnaround.
