Red Bull Sets Pace in Initial ADUO Results Amid System Controversy

Red Bull Ford Powertrains leads the first ADUO benchmark, but the FIA's 'catch-up' mechanism is facing criticism for a measurement flaw that could inadvertently benefit the strongest teams.

Red Bull Ford Powertrains has emerged as the benchmark in the first ADUO (Additional Upgrade and Development Opportunities) period, though the FIA has delayed the public announcement following a review request from the team. While designed as a catch-up mechanism to maintain grid parity, the initial results have exposed a systemic flaw in how development opportunities are allocated.

Why it matters:

The ADUO system is intended to prevent a single manufacturer from dominating the power unit era. However, by measuring only the internal combustion engine (ICE) while allowing upgrades to electrical components, the system risks rewarding teams that already possess the best overall power unit, potentially widening the performance gap rather than closing it.

The details:

  • Performance Gaps: Mercedes trails Red Bull by 2-4%, earning one extra upgrade this year and next. Ferrari, Audi, and Honda are more than 4% behind, granting them two upgrades this season and two more in 2027.
  • The Review: Red Bull requested a factual verification of sensor data and analysis to ensure accuracy, leading to a 7-10 day delay in the official FIA release.
  • The Measurement Loophole: Although only the ICE is measured, qualifying manufacturers can modify the battery and MGU-K. Paddock consensus suggests Mercedes may have the superior overall PU despite a weaker ICE, meaning they could receive upgrades to become even more dominant.

The big picture:

This discrepancy creates a strategic "game of chess" for manufacturers. Because lead times for upgrades are significant, teams may intentionally delay the introduction of performance gains to remain "under-powered" during the next measurement cycle. This strategic sandbagging would ensure they remain eligible for additional development opportunities in future periods.

What's next:

The FIA is currently finalizing the verification process for the first period. While the current rules were agreed upon by manufacturers in early 2025 to keep the process simple, the misalignment between ICE performance and overall PU efficiency may force the governing body to reconsider the parameters for future assessment windows.
