Rookies Take Over Barcelona FP1 as Colton Herta Makes F1 Debut

A surge of rookie drivers will take over the first practice session in Barcelona, highlighted by Colton Herta's first official miles for Cadillac and Leonardo Fornaroli's debut for McLaren.

Several teams are stepping aside for their reserve drivers during Friday's first practice session in Barcelona. With the 2026 season in full swing, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is serving as the primary proving ground for the next generation of talent to gain critical mileage before the main events.

Why it matters:

F1's rookie regulations mandate that teams provide drivers with limited experience official track time. Given the unexpected calendar shifts this year, teams are utilizing the Barcelona GP to fulfill these requirements. Because the regulars already possess data from the January pre-season tests at this same venue, they can afford to sit out the first 60 minutes without compromising their race weekend preparation.

The details:

  • Colton Herta (Cadillac): In one of the most anticipated debuts, the American star makes his first official F1 session appearance, replacing Sergio Perez.
  • Leonardo Fornaroli (McLaren): The Italian talent—who secured back-to-back F3 (2024) and F2 (2025) titles—will take the wheel of Lando Norris' MCL40 for the first time.
  • Dino Beganovic (Ferrari): A long-term Ferrari Driver Academy member, Beganovic replaces Lewis Hamilton and will finally drive the SF-26 on track.
  • Frederik Vesti (Mercedes): Stepping in for Kimi Antonelli, Vesti marks his fifth official F1 appearance after transitioning to the role of third driver.
  • Ayumu Iwasa (Red Bull Racing): The Super Formula standout replaces Isack Hadjar, continuing his trajectory as a versatile reserve for the Red Bull stable.
  • Luke Browning (Williams): Replacing Alex Albon, Browning brings experience from both F2 and his current campaign in Super Formula.
  • Paul Aron (Audi): On loan from Alpine, Aron will handle the German manufacturer's machinery in both Spain and Austria.

What's next:

While these sessions are primarily for data collection and regulatory compliance, the performance of these rookies—particularly Herta and Fornaroli—will be closely monitored. These outings provide critical benchmarks for teams as they evaluate their talent pipelines and determine future seat priorities for the remainder of the 2026 season.
