Turkish Grand Prix set for 2027 F1 return with five-year deal

The Turkish Grand Prix will return to the F1 calendar in 2027 with a new five-year deal, taking a slot on the now-full 24-race schedule. The event at the acclaimed Istanbul Park circuit replaces the Dutch and rotating Spanish GPs, marking a significant comeback backed by the Turkish government. This move effectively locks the calendar until 2028, pausing the entry of other new venues.

The Turkish Grand Prix will return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027 after securing a five-year deal, filling a slot in the now-complete 24-race schedule. The event at Istanbul Park, which last hosted F1 in 2021, will replace the departing Dutch Grand Prix and the rotating Spanish Grand Prix next year, joining the also-returning Portuguese GP.

Why it matters:

The return of the Turkish GP underscores F1's strategy of rotating classic and popular circuits within a capped calendar, rewarding venues with strong fan support and government backing. Istanbul Park is widely regarded as one of the most challenging and exciting tracks on the roster, famous for its multi-apex Turn 8. Its reinstatement, backed directly by the Turkish president, also highlights the sport's continued geopolitical and commercial expansion into key markets.

The details:

  • The five-year deal was announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with exact 2027 dates to be confirmed.
  • Formula 1 has officially capped its season length at 24 races, deeming it the maximum sustainable number for teams and stakeholders. The 2027 calendar is now considered full.
  • The 2027 schedule will see the Turkish GP and Portuguese GP join, while the Dutch GP (contract expired) and the Barcelona GP (on a rotational contract) will not feature.
  • F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali praised Istanbul as a "cultural gateway" and thanked Turkish authorities for their support in securing the return.
  • Istanbul Park has hosted nine F1 races historically (2005-2011, 2020-2021). Memorable moments include Lewis Hamilton clinching his seventh world title there in 2020 and Felipe Massa's trio of wins for Ferrari.

What's next:

With the 24-race limit now reached for 2027, any other new events or countries vying for a spot—such as Argentina or Thailand, which have expressed recent interest—will likely have to wait until at least 2028 for an opportunity. The only current contract expiring in 2027 is for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, but its commercial importance makes a departure after just five years highly improbable. The focus now shifts to the finalization of the 2027 calendar and the preparations for F1's return to a fan-favorite circuit in Istanbul.
