Canadian Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying: Russell Leads Mercedes 1-2, Verstappen Limited to 7th
George Russell took Sprint pole at the Canadian Grand Prix, heading a Mercedes front-row lockout with teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Defending champion Max Verstappen could only manage seventh, while Ferrari locked out row three.
Mercedes delivered a commanding performance in Sprint Qualifying for the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix, with George Russell securing pole position ahead of teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The result marks the first all-Mercedes front row of the season and signals a strong step forward for the Silver Arrows at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Why it matters:
After a mixed start to 2026, Mercedes’ dominant one-two in Montreal suggests their upgrade package is working. With McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri close behind in third and fourth, the pecking order appears tight at the front – but Verstappen’s seventh place raises questions about Red Bull’s current form.
The details:
- Russell’s lap: The Briton posted a 1:13.026 in SQ3, 0.525s quicker than Antonelli. His earlier SQ2 time was 1:14.772, showing his ability to find time when it mattered.
- Antonelli impresses: The rookie continued his strong qualifying streak, splitting the McLarens and beating both Ferraris.
- Norris vs Piastri: Norris took third (1:13.957) ahead of his teammate Piastri (1:13.858), a reversal of recent form where Piastri had the edge.
- Ferrari: Lewis Hamilton (5th, 1:13.465) and Charles Leclerc (6th, 1:13.554) were just over two-tenths off pole, but couldn't crack the top four.
- Verstappen’s struggle: The world champion managed only 7th with a 1:14.412, over 1.3s off Russell. His Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar took 8th in a solid session.
- Surprises: Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) qualified 9th, while Carlos Sainz (Williams) took 10th – both ahead of Audi drivers and other midfield runners.
- Eliminated in SQ2: Nico Hülkenberg (Audi, 11th), Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi, 12th), Franco Colapinto (Alpine, 13th), and both Haas cars (Ocon 14th, Bearman 15th) missed the top-10 shootout.
- Back row: Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) could only manage 16th, followed by Sergio Perez (Cadillac), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Pierre Gasly (Alpine) and Valtteri Bottas (Cadillac).
What's next:
The Sprint race takes place later today, offering valuable championship points and a first glimpse at race pace. If Mercedes can convert their qualifying advantage, they could close the gap to McLaren in the constructors’ standings. For Verstappen, recovering from 7th will be a tough challenge on a track where overtaking is possible but not easy.
